Below is information about specific Balikpapan compound communities:

There are a number of private company compounds, such as PMC and KBCIII for Schlumberger employees, Pasir Ridge for Chevron, and the Total Compound for Total Employees.  If you are employed by one of these companies, it is best to get information directly from your employer before relocating.  PMC and KBC III are located in Batakan and are smaller compounds on the beachfront.  They have their own pools, gyms, and community facilities along with spacious stand alone housing.  Pasir Ridge located past the commercial downtown district and has the Pasir Ridge International (American) school on their large compound.  It also boasts a library, convention hall, fire department, restaurant, large pool with water slides, tennis courts, among other features in this large and highly secure compound.  Total is located near the Pertamina refinery across from the Total Hospital.  This secure compound also boasts a library, pool, tennis courts, and the French international school.  Although these are closed compounds, you'll often find yourself invited to a community event inside the gates.

Palm Court. In Batakan near many company headquarters, Palm Court offers units in a securely gated compound.  It has plentiful amenities including an on-site restaurant, tennis courts, and gym.  Some units have their own private pool, but the compound also offers a spacious community pool.  This compound tends to be more FIFO, singles, and couples, however families are welcome as well.

Batakan Housing Complex (BHC) - Located in Batakan with the Australian International School onsite, this compound is fully gated and secure.  It boasts a large community pool with social club/BBQ area. Houses are on a grid pattern, with a barrack feel. The landscaping is mature and offers much shade. Houses in the back have yards which face the ocean and are gated to a clean beach area.  The beach is also accessible from the community social club/BBQ area.  This compound offers amenities associated with an expatriate compound in a family friendly environment.  

Villa Beta.  This is large, yet quiet compound in a park setting with good security.  Houses are well-spaced apart and family sized with garage and decks.  The compound has many amenities such as gym, pool, tennis court, bowling alley, bar, and an international school onsite.  Though it is slightly dated and the facilities and homes are less modern compared to other compounds, the setting can be ideal for large families.
