Balikpapan Expats

A community forum for the expatriates of Balikpapan.

Balikpapan has many options for food shopping.  In addition to the local markets, there are numerous grocery stores in town that sell local and imported goods.

Carrefour is the newest grocery store.  Located in Balikpapan Baru in Duan Village.  It's similar to an upscale Hypermart, and has not only groceries, but also clothing, electronics, and department store items for sale.  The complex has a coffee shop, Wendy's and other restaurants, as well as an amusement park on the third floor.  There are very limited imported items, but for Indonesian products, it's fairly well stocked.

Another newer grocery store in Balikpapan... and it has early hours.  Imported goods including meats, cheeses, and fruits/vegetables at reasonable prices. Although this store sells things other stores do not (imported items), watch out for expiration dates and signs of mishandling of temperatures. This place has a great little coffee shop and the best bread in town.

Located: Mt Haryono

Farmer's Market -(Formally Ranch Market) Located at The Plaza, Farmer's Market is a full size grocery store with a large selection of local and imported goods.  Various cuts of pork are readily available and they have one of the best (but most expensive) selections of imported fruits and vegetables.  Fairly quick check out, but check the sku prices to avoid any unexpected prices.

HappyFresh (delivery service) is NOT available in BPN, so don't bother downloading the app.

Hero's - Located in Balikpapan Baru Mal Fantasi, Hero's offers both local and imported goods. The meat section is a bit limited, but the packaged snacks section offers quite a bit of variety.  You'll find Hero to have a fairly quick check-out and people to help with your trolley if needed.

Food Mart - Located in lower level of BSB Superblock, Food Mart is a convenient grocery store. They carry a range of local and imported goods, however it is a smaller selection than other stores.  Although some of the items are more expensive than other stores, you'll find all the basics here.

Hypermart - Two locations -  The Plaza and Pentacity Mall, Hypermart is an all-in-one store where you can find a mix of groceries and household goods.  Hypermart has a very limited amount of imported goods, however you will find their local products to be reasonably priced.  Although not as convenient a location as other stores (you need to take your trolley down the escalator to get to the parking deck in both locations), it can be a good place to go if you need multiple types of products.

Lottimart - Located in Balikpapan Baru at Jalan Ruhui Rahayu, Lottiemart is the "bulk warehouse" of Balikpapan.  Some items have a minimum quantity to purchase and there is a discount if you go above the minimum (noted on the price display).  Lottiemart is a good place for meat as well as staple kitchen items, however, they have minimal imported items.  Lottiemart is more than just groceries so it can be a convenient place to shop if you have different things on your list.  The downside to Lottiemart is that the lines can long and slow (go early).  They also provide delivery service. Free parking.

Yova Supermarket - Located in Gunung Malang, Yova's offers all the basics and more at a good price. The meat options, although limited (frozen), has imported selections and good quality (including pork).  They have a good selection of can goods, cleaning products, and household products.  Free parking.

Sukanda (Diamond) - Located off Mulawarman in the Borneo Paradiso complex (after the ruko's, it's on the left up the hill - look for trucks with big colored circles on them), this shop offers a selection of frozen and diary imported goods and a limited selection of dry goods. Sukanda is a the supplier to most of the grocery stores, so it's a good place to get your products still frozen before the other stores defrost them (eg. fresh milk comes in frozen and defrosted at the grocery store).

Giant  - Located off Mt. Haryono.  It has limited imported items, but a convenient location.  In addition to groceries, it sells appliances, clothes, and household items in competition with Hypermart and Lottimart.

When first opened, prices were super discounted.  Now they are fairly comparable with other stores.

CV Sentral - Located just after the Blue Sky Hotel, CV Sentral has a grocery store upstairs from their main general store below.  Offering a selection of local and imported goods, this store focuses mainly on dry goods with a limited selection of frozen and refrigerated items.  It does, however, have a good selection of baking items.

Toko Royal - Royal is located at Fantasy Junction in Balikpapan Baru (Blok 1 #17).  This small store specialize in imported goods and specialty items.  They offer a range of imported products from dry goods to frozen meat and bread.  They also sell a limited supply of imported vegetables.  The owner can keep you up to date on when new orders are coming and and also will order items if available with his suppliers.  Also one of the best places for wine and spirits.
